Served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe. Served in 2nd Infantry/2nd Quartermaster Corps. Captured during the Battle of the Buldge. POW in Muhlberg, Germany Stalag 4B and 4F from 12/17/44-5/8/45. Repatriated to camp Lucky Strike in Northern France.
Stationed two years at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska transcribing Russian morse code messages related to aircraft activity. Stationed also at Kelly AFB San Antonio, TX.
Fought in Bougainville and Manila in the Philippines. Was almost killed by a Japanese soldier, but a fellow soldier saved his life by killing the enemy. Herbert came home with a Japanese flag taken from the soldier who almost killed him. While serving he contracted Malaria and was treated. Side effects of the medication affected both of his hands and this took him out of active duty.

Served in Pearl Harbor and Pacific. USS St. Louis, “The Lucky Lou”. The Lucky Lou was disabled by torpedoes and Kamikaze fighter jets leaving the crew floating in the water for three days. They encountered additional bombing while fending off shark attacks trying to survive.
